About the desk
How this desk works
Skardu Times is a national newspaper published from Skardu. It covers the whole country: Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Islamabad, Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. Because it is published from the north, it covers Gilgit-Baltistan in a depth the papers of Karachi and Lahore do not.
Every few minutes an automated pipeline reads the country’s newsrooms, the regional press, the Urdu outlets, and keyword searches across everything Google News indexes. Reports of the same event are grouped, so one story carried by five outlets is filed once, from all five. A story from outside Gilgit-Baltistan runs only when at least two independent publishers are carrying it.
Each story is then written by an editorial model: an original headline and body in English, a full edition in Urdu, a province and a section. The desk scores each story for importance and only the most urgent reach the breaking rail. The biggest are also rendered as one-minute vertical video.
Three editions
The paper is published in English and in Urdu. The Urdu edition is not a translation layer over the English one. The desk writes both when it files a story, and an Urdu reader who never opens the English edition learns everything an English reader learns.
There is also a Balti edition. Balti is the language of the valleys this paper is published from, and no other national newspaper prints a word of it. It is also a low-resource language: a language model asked to write Balti news copy produces something that reads as Balti to anyone who does not speak it. So the desk does not write Balti at all. The Balti edition carries stories written by Balti speakers, and shows Urdu everywhere a Balti version has not been written. When it does, the page says so.
Sourcing and credit
The desk rewrites rather than republishes. It is instructed to report the facts a source establishes in its own construction, to attribute anything it cannot independently confirm to the outlet that reported it, and never to invent a detail, a number, a name or a quote.
Every story page names every outlet it was written from and links to each original report. Where two outlets disagree on a figure such as a death toll, the story says so and gives both, each attributed.
