Karachi mayor opens upgraded Gadap water pumping station

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has inaugurated the Saulah Muhammad Water Pumping Station in Gadap Town after improvement work at the facility, which had not been upgraded for several decades. Speaking at the ceremony, the mayor said the station's chlorination centre had also been made operational.

According to ProPakistani, the upgraded station is expected to improve water supply to residential areas and housing societies along Memon Goth Road, including Jafar Tayyar, Khokhrapar and Firdous Colony.

Wahab said residents of Gulshan-e-Hadeed had faced water supply problems since Pakistan Steel Mills stopped supplying water to the area, and that Pakistan Peoples Party representatives had taken steps to address the issue. He also announced that a new pipeline capable of carrying 10 million gallons per day (MGD) had been laid to improve water availability in Lyari, with another pipeline installed along the Lyari Expressway. Measures were also being taken to prevent water theft, he said.

The mayor added that further work was under way to improve Memon Goth Road, and that the reopened Spencer Eye Hospital was receiving around 300 patients a day.

In a separate development, Karamullah Waqasi, the PPP's parliamentary leader in the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation and spokesperson for the mayor, chaired a meeting on issues related to the water pumping station in Parsi Colony, Daily Times reported. Council members and people from various union councils attended the meeting at the parliamentary office, where proposals to address supply problems were considered.

Waqasi said consultation and coordinated planning should keep public needs at the centre of decision-making, and that efforts were under way to monitor development projects, resolve water supply complaints and eliminate encroachments. He said the mayor had taken notice of citizens' complaints and directed the relevant departments to take prompt and effective action.

On the mayor's directives, Waqasi also carried out a late-night inspection of road carpeting work in the Old City Area, reviewing progress from Bohra Pir to the City Court as well as on Chand Bibi Road and around Lady Dufferin Hospital, Civil Hospital and the Trauma Centre. Administrative officials, UC-13 Vice Chairman Sajid Shah Bukhari and Union Council President Shakir were present, according to Daily Times.
