A 65-year-old woman, a mother of five, was found murdered in a government flat in the FC Area of Sharifabad, Karachi, in the early hours of Wednesday, with police saying she had been struck on the head and body with stones and that an attempt had been made to cut her throat with a cutter.

The woman was identified as Farida Begum, wife of Syed Mahmood Ali, the station house officer of Sharifabad police station told Express News. She lived in Block 55/15 of the FC Area. UrduPoint carried the same account.

According to the police account, the body was found by the son who lived with her. He works in the mobile phone trade in Clifton and returns home late; he came in at about 2am on the night between Tuesday and Wednesday and found his mother lying in a pool of blood. Police described the assailant or assailants as unidentified.

The officer said three of her four sons and her daughter are married and live separately. Her husband has lived apart, at his mother's house, for the past 10 to 15 years, he said.

The body was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for legal proceedings and remained there for several hours because no lady medico-legal officer was available, Express News reported. Police said they asked the MLO on duty repeatedly to complete the paperwork and were told that efforts were being made to reach a lady MLO who could not be contacted.

The MLO on duty declined to answer questions from reporters, saying the police surgeon had strictly forbidden any conversation with the media.

The SHO said the body was handed over to the family on Wednesday morning after legal formalities, and that the heirs had said they would come to register the first information report after the burial.

No arrest was reported and police did not release the name of any suspect. The reports did not say whether the killing was captured on any camera in the building, and did not give a motive.

The case follows a pattern of complaints in Karachi about the slow handling of medico-legal work when a woman's body requires examination, which delays the handover of the body to grieving families.
