Sindh CM lauds NICVD doctors for removing bullet from boy's heart
A 12-year-old from Khuzdar was discharged after surgery that removed a bullet without stopping his heartbeat, Express News reported.
KARACHI: A 12-year-old boy from Khuzdar district in Balochistan, who was brought to the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) in Karachi with a bullet lodged in his heart, has been discharged after recovering, Express News reported on Monday.
The child was admitted in a critical condition about a month ago. A paediatric cardiac team led by Professor Sohail Khan Bangash carried out a complex operation that lasted nearly two hours to remove the bullet, according to Express News. The report did not say how the boy was shot or when the injury occurred.
UrduPoint reported that the bullet was removed without stopping the heartbeat, and that the Sindh chief minister congratulated the NICVD doctors on the achievement. UrduPoint described the procedure as an example of the unmatched skill of Pakistani medical experts.
Express News quoted Professor Bangash as saying the child was brought to the national cardiac institute in a very serious state, with the bullet embedded in his heart. The operation was conducted with the support of the Sindh government, which provides modern treatment facilities for complex heart diseases at NICVD, the report added.
Removing a foreign object from the heart without interrupting its function is a high-risk procedure. Both outlets reported the case as a notable medical success because the boy survived the injury and the subsequent surgery.
NICVD, based in Karachi, is a public-sector cardiac hospital that treats patients from across Pakistan, including those referred from Balochistan for complex heart procedures. According to Express News, the Sindh government supports the institute so that patients can access specialised care.
The child remained under observation at the hospital for about a month before he was discharged. The reports gave no information about the circumstances of the shooting or whether any investigation is under way. Both outlets carried the story on Monday.
