Tarar proposes national council on cyber security and digital literacy
The information minister used the PTA's Cyber Security Awareness Week to float a coordinating body and to call for digital literacy in school curricula.

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar has proposed a National Cyber Security and Social Media Awareness Council to coordinate institutions, promote digital literacy and warn the public about misinformation and emerging cyber threats.
Tarar put the proposal at the opening ceremony of Cyber Security Awareness Week 2026, an event organised by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, according to Daily Times. The same report said he called for digital literacy to be taught in educational curricula across the country.
The Associated Press of Pakistan carried the proposal in a single paragraph, describing the council's aims as strengthening institutional coordination, improving public awareness of misinformation and addressing emerging cyber threats. APP's account did not say where the ceremony was held or when the council would be established.
Pakistan Today also reported the proposal, under a headline about a national council to combat cyber threats.
Daily Times reported that, as the minister described it, the council would work to protect citizens from digital threats and to raise public awareness of them.
None of the three reports set out the proposed council's membership, its legal status, its funding or a timetable. None said whether the proposal has gone to the federal cabinet, whether a draft bill or summary has been prepared, or which ministry or regulator would host the body.
No text of the proposal appeared in the reports available to this newspaper.
The coverage differed in emphasis. APP led on the council and on misinformation, Daily Times led on digital literacy in the curriculum, and Pakistan Today led on cyber threats. None of the outlets published a direct quotation from Tarar in the copy available.
APP filed its report on Saturday afternoon. Daily Times said the proposal was made on Saturday.
The PTA organised the awareness week, according to Daily Times. The reports did not say how long the week runs or which other events are scheduled under it.
