Twelve injured as mob attacks food safety team in Muzaffargarh

At least 12 officials, including seven police personnel and five Punjab Food Authority employees, were injured when a team carrying out an operation against the sale of unsafe milk was attacked by local residents in Muzaffargarh on Tuesday, police said.

Two station house officers were among the seven police personnel hurt, according to police. The attackers also held some police personnel hostage for a short period during the incident, police said.

Police said the operation targeted people allegedly involved in selling milk unfit for human consumption. Personnel from two police stations reached the scene after the Punjab Food Authority passed on information, but the action turned violent when local residents allegedly attacked the officials carrying out the raid, police said.

UrduPoint reported that the team came under attack during an operation to dispose of adulterated milk. Neither account specified how serious the injuries were, and police did not say whether any of those hurt were kept in hospital for treatment.

Two separate cases were registered at City Police Station and Sadar Police Station in connection with the incident. According to police, the cases name 60 people, of whom 15 are specifically nominated in the complaints. Six suspects allegedly involved in the attack have been arrested.

Police said further legal proceedings were under way and that they were investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack on the government teams. The figure of 12 injured was given by police to both outlets carrying the report; there was no independent confirmation of the toll, and police did not release the names of the arrested suspects.

The Punjab Food Authority is the provincial regulator responsible for food safety and standards, and its inspection teams conduct raids against adulterated milk and other food items across Punjab. Its operations are frequently carried out with police cover, and officials say resistance at the point of inspection is a recurring problem for field staff.

Muzaffargarh lies in southern Punjab. No senior district administration official had issued a separate statement on the incident in the reports available.
