Adviser tells Senate Imran Khan's sister Noreen is well after treatment

Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political and Public Affairs Rana Sanaullah told the Senate on Thursday that Noreen Niazi, a sister of jailed PTI founder Imran Khan, was fine after medical treatment was provided to her at a hospital a day earlier, Dawn reported.

Noreen Niazi, Aleema Khan and Uzma Khan have been in detention since September 21 under the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance, 1960, on orders of the Lahore deputy commissioner. According to Dawn, Noreen's lawyer said a day before Sanaullah's statement that she had been moved from Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology because of high blood pressure.

The adviser's remarks came on the floor of the upper house, where members have repeatedly raised the detention of the former prime minister's relatives. The government has defended the orders as administrative measures taken under provincial law; the PTI has challenged the detentions in court and in parliament.

In the same sitting, responding to points raised by Senators Kamran Murtaza and Ali Zafar, Sanaullah said no grievance could justify the use of objectionable language against the state, the Associated Press of Pakistan reported. He said personal differences must not be placed above the collective interests of the country and the nation, and that he held the Maulana whose remarks had been raised in great respect, according to APP.

Separately, the Lahore High Court suspended a judicial penalty imposed on the Station House Officer of Kot Lakhpat, Afzal Rauf, Daily Times reported. A special anti-narcotics court in Lahore had fined the police official Rs200 for failing to present official case records, and the high court suspended the sentence against surety bonds of Rs50,000 after an appeal by the officer, the outlet said.

No date has been given for a further medical report on Noreen Niazi, and neither the Senate record nor the reports carried by the three outlets indicated when the detention orders would next be reviewed.
