The government has approved the deployment of Pakistan Army and Rangers personnel in two Punjab constituencies for the by-elections scheduled for 8 November, according to reports published on Thursday by Dunya News and Pakistan Connect.

Dunya News reported that the army and Rangers will be deployed in the two constituencies going to the polls. Pakistan Connect reported that the government had approved the deployment. Both accounts describe the same decision.

Neither report named the two constituencies. Neither said how many personnel will be stationed, whether the deployment covers the campaign period as well as polling day, or which authority issued the order.

Punjab returns more National Assembly seats than any other province, and control of the province's constituencies is central to national electoral arithmetic.

The by-elections are due on 8 November. The two reports published on Thursday did not carry the notification number or the text of the approval order.

A third item listed alongside these reports, published by ProPakistani, concerned a separate decision by the Economic Coordination Committee on supplementary grants, including a Rs1.094 billion grant for an executive jet for the Pakistan Army and about Rs275 billion for water sector projects. It did not concern the by-poll deployment.

How the reports differ

Dunya News led with the deployment itself, reporting that army and Rangers personnel will be sent to the two constituencies. Pakistan Connect led with the government's approval of the move. Neither outlet named the constituencies, the number of personnel or the issuing authority. A third item listed with the story, from ProPakistani, covered a separate Economic Coordination Committee decision on supplementary grants and an army executive jet, not the by-poll deployment.
