The chief minister of Gilgit-Baltistan has inaugurated a website for the region's law department intended to give the public online access to legislation, according to a report by UrduPoint.

The report, filed on Thursday, said the inauguration was held for the law department's site and described its purpose as providing online access to laws. It did not name the chief minister, give the venue or date of the ceremony, provide the website's address, or say which acts, rules and notifications have been placed on it.

Skardu Times could not independently confirm the launch or reach the website.

Access to the text of Gilgit-Baltistan's laws has traditionally depended on printed gazette copies and departmental records, which are not easily available outside the region's main offices. The region has its own legislative assembly and a Gilgit-Baltistan Council, and the text of measures passed by both is needed by lawyers, litigants, journalists and officials.

Successive governments in Gilgit-Baltistan have promised to widen public access to official records, and Pakistan's right to information law applies to the region's public bodies. Whether the new site carries only legislation or also amendments, subordinate rules and notifications was not stated in the report.

The report also gave no indication of who built or funded the website, whether it will be updated as new laws are passed, or whether it is now live for public use.

The chief minister's office and the law department could not be reached to confirm the details of the launch.

Further information was not immediately available.
