Gilgit-Baltistan will mark its Independence Day on November 1, an occasion that a report in The Daily Independent said would reaffirm the region's commitment to Pakistan.

The report, published by dailyindependent.com.pk, gave the date of the observance but set out no programme of events. No schedule of official ceremonies, and no statement from the regional government or the Governor's office, was available at the time of filing.

November 1 is observed in Gilgit-Baltistan each year as the anniversary of the end of Dogra rule in the region in 1947 and the declaration of accession to Pakistan. It is one of the fixed dates in the region's calendar, marked in Gilgit, Skardu and the district headquarters across Gilgit-Baltistan.

The Daily Independent did not say who would lead this year's observance, where any main event would be held, or whether public offices and educational institutions would close for the day. Those details are ordinarily announced by the regional government in the days before the date.

Gilgit-Baltistan is administered under arrangements framed by the federal government rather than as a province with the constitutional standing of Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa or Balochistan. The region's constitutional status, and long-standing local demands for greater rights, have been the subject of prolonged political debate.

No official statement on this year's programme was available, and this newspaper was not able to verify arrangements for the day independently. Further details are expected closer to November 1.
