Gilgit roads being rebuilt as sewerage scheme continues

The report linking the two works did not name the affected roads, the cost, the executing agency or a completion date, and the details could not be independently confirmed.

Roads in Gilgit that were cut open for a sewerage project are being restored, according to a report published by Daily Independent, which said the repair of the road surface is moving ahead alongside the utility scheme.

The report, carried by the paper on Sunday, did not say which roads or bazaars are affected, how much of the network is being rebuilt, what the work costs, which department or contractor is carrying it out, or when the roads are expected to be fully reopened. Skardu Times could not independently confirm any of those details, and no separate official statement on the progress of the work was available at the time of filing.

The item as published consisted of a headline and a short summary line, with no further reporting attached. That leaves the practical questions a reader in Gilgit would ask (whether the main carriageways are passable, whether diversions are in place, and how long traders and transport operators should expect disruption) unanswered in the public record.

Roads in Gilgit carry local traffic, goods vehicles and the tourist traffic that moves through the city towards the northern valleys of Gilgit-Baltistan. Utility work that leaves trenches open on those routes affects access to bazaars, hospitals and bus stands, and the timing of repairs matters more in the weeks when traffic volumes rise.

The city has seen repeated rounds of excavation for water, sewerage and cable work in recent years, with resurfacing often following well behind the digging. Daily Independent's report indicates that in this instance the resurfacing is under way; it does not establish how much of the dug-up network has so far been restored.

This story will be updated if the department concerned issues a statement giving the scope, cost or schedule of the work.
