Heavy vehicles diverted off M2, M3 to GT Road
Motorway Police says cargo traffic heading to Islamabad from Lahore will be rerouted at Kala Shah Kaku from September 23.

The Motorway Police has announced that heavy and cargo vehicles travelling from Lahore towards Islamabad will be diverted from the M-2 and M-3 motorways starting September 23, 2026. The diversion was announced on Monday, a day before it is scheduled to take effect. The motorways are a key route for cargo between Punjab and the federal capital.
According to a spokesperson for the Motorway Police, the restriction applies to heavy traffic using both motorways. Vehicles travelling towards Islamabad will be taken off the motorway at the Kala Shah Kaku interchange and directed onto GT Road. GT Road has been designated as the alternative route for large vehicles heading to the federal capital while the diversion remains in place. Officials at Kala Shah Kaku will direct vehicles to GT Road.
Drivers of heavy vehicles have been told to follow the designated alternative route and to comply with all traffic instructions. They have also been asked to check the route and traffic situation before starting a journey, and to follow the latest instructions issued by the Motorway Police. The police said drivers should plan their journeys keeping the diversion in mind and cooperate with officials at the diversion point.
The announcement did not specify an end date for the diversion. It also did not state the reason for the measure or whether the diversion will operate around the clock. The statement made no mention of restrictions on cars, motorcycles or other light vehicles. The diversion applies only to traffic heading towards Islamabad; no similar restriction was announced for the return journey.
The diversion affects cargo trucks, tankers, trailers and other heavy vehicles travelling from Lahore towards Islamabad on the M-2 and M-3 motorways. Once redirected at Kala Shah Kaku, drivers are expected to use GT Road for the remainder of the journey. Pakistan Connect also reported the diversion plan without adding further details, while ProPakistani cited a Motorway Police spokesperson in its report.
No further information was immediately available from the Motorway Police about the duration or scope of the restriction. Transport operators and individual drivers were urged to stay updated through official channels.
