India protests to Pakistan over Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly elections
Indian state broadcaster DD News gives no date, venue or level for the representation, and reports no response from Islamabad.
India has lodged a protest with Pakistan over elections to the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly, Indian state broadcaster DD News reported, in an account that gave no date for the representation, no venue and no indication of the level at which it was made.
DD News did not report what the protest said, which Pakistani official received it, or whether Islamabad has responded. Pakistan's foreign ministry issued no statement in the reporting carried by the Indian broadcaster.
The item was the only report on the subject in the desk's search, and its full text could not be retrieved. Details normally carried in such reports, including the name of the Indian official who made the representation and the wording of the protest, could not be confirmed.
Gilgit-Baltistan is administered by Pakistan and has its own legislative assembly, the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly, whose members are elected. New Delhi does not recognise the assembly or the elections held for it, and considers the region part of its own territory. Islamabad rejects that position.
Protests of this kind are lodged through diplomatic channels, usually by a foreign ministry spokesperson or through the two countries' high commissions.
No date has been given for the elections the protest refers to.
