Pakistan strikes Afghanistan after accusing Kabul of drone attacks
UNAMA confirms deaths and injuries in Kabul as Islamabad accuses Kabul of cross-border drone strikes.
Pakistani airstrikes hit targets inside Afghanistan after Islamabad accused Kabul of carrying out drone attacks, according to reports published on 24 September. The US outlet The Batesville Daily Guard reported the strikes in a headline, but its full story was not immediately available. Separately, Indian state broadcaster News On AIR reported that the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) had confirmed deaths and injuries from Pakistani airstrikes in Kabul.
That is the first UN confirmation of casualties linked to the strikes. UNAMA did not give a toll or specify whether the dead and wounded were civilians or fighters, and no Afghan or Pakistani government statement had been issued at the time of filing. The Pakistani military and foreign office have not commented on the reported operation.
The reported strikes follow a pattern of cross-border tension between Pakistan and Afghanistan over militant safe havens. Islamabad has repeatedly said Kabul shelters anti-Pakistan groups, while Taliban authorities deny the charge. The drone attack allegation that reportedly preceded the strikes is an unusually specific claim; previous Pakistani strikes in Afghanistan have been linked to suicide bombings or other ground attacks. The paper could not independently verify the reports.
