Pozzolan extraction begins for Diamer Basha Dam main structure
WAPDA has started moving the material from Gini, Diamer, to be processed for roller-compacted concrete before the main dam pour begins.

Extraction of pozzolan has formally started at Gini in Diamer, clearing the way for construction of the main dam structure of the Diamer Basha Dam project, the Associated Press of Pakistan reported on Thursday.
The material will be processed for use in roller-compacted concrete, APP said, and its extraction and transport are a requirement before RCC placement can begin at the main dam site. The report said the step followed directions from the WAPDA chairman.
APP did not say how much pozzolan would be extracted from Gini, how long the work would take, or the date on which RCC placement would start. WAPDA described the start of extraction as a major milestone towards construction of the main dam.
Pozzolan is used as a cementitious material in concrete; at Diamer Basha it is to be mixed into the RCC that will form the main dam. The Gini extraction site lies in Diamer district of Gilgit-Baltistan, close to the dam project on the Indus River.
The Diamer Basha Dam is a national hydropower and water storage project. The start of pozzolan extraction marks an earlier stage before main dam construction moves into the concrete placement phase, according to APP.
