Romanian climber to discuss Nanga Parbat ascent at film festival

Romanian climber Horia Colibășanu will speak about his ascent of Nanga Parbat, Pakistan's second-highest peak, at a mountain film festival in Brașov this week, according to Romanian news agency News.ro.

Colibășanu is scheduled to deliver a talk at the Reduta Cultural Centre on September 26 during the 11th Alpin Film Festival. He will discuss preparation, risk management, endurance and the decisions climbers make in extreme high-altitude conditions, News.ro reported.

The festival runs from September 23 to 27 across Brașov, Râșnov and Bușteni, with mountain films, conferences, exhibitions, book launches and outdoor workshops. Admission to side events is free; film screenings require free seat reservations on the Eventbook platform.

The opening gala screened "Iron Winter" directed by Kasimir Burgess, which won the Grand Trophy at Banff 2026. The closing night on Sunday will feature "Sherpa" by Jennifer Peedom, a BAFTA-nominated documentary presented with support from the International Alliance for Mountain Film.

Festival director Dan Burlac said the programme is designed to bring mountain stories closer to audiences and to highlight responsibility toward nature and mountain communities. He noted that the Romanian competition has grown each year, with more filmmakers turning to mountain subjects.

Nanga Parbat, 8,126 metres high in Gilgit-Baltistan's Diamer district, is one of the world's most difficult 8,000-metre peaks and is known to mountaineers as the Killer Mountain. Colibășanu, a Romanian high-altitude climber, has climbed several 8,000ers without supplementary oxygen.

On September 27, the festival will also host a discussion titled "Performance climbing - a way of life at altitude" with Romanian climbers Maria Dănilă, Adrian Ahrițculesei, Alexandra Vișan and Csaba Varga. The complete schedule and reservations are available on the festival's website and Facebook page.
