ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's insurers settled more than one million motor, accident, health, fire and property claims in 2025, paying around Rs548 billion, according to the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan's Insurance Industry Statistics Report 2025 released on Friday.

Life insurers paid Rs410 billion in claims, up from Rs380 billion in 2024, and non-life insurers paid approximately Rs138 billion, up from Rs92 billion. The report, published for the first time with claims counts, shows life insurers settled more than 33,000 death claims during the year. Non-life insurers settled over 720,000 accident and health claims, more than 282,000 motor claims, and around 11,000 fire and property claims.

Death claims under life insurance rose to about Rs37 billion from Rs33 billion the previous year.

SECP Chairman Dr Kabir Sidhu said claims settlement was a key measure of insurers' performance. "Publishing claim amounts and counts will strengthen accountability, build policyholders' trust and support sustainable growth," he said. He added that SECP is undertaking a comprehensive review of insurers' claims-handling processes and has placed the draft Market Conduct Rules for Insurers, 2026, under public consultation.

The report recorded growth across the industry. Total assets increased by more than 9 percent to Rs4.1 trillion, while gross written premium rose by 15 percent to Rs778 billion. Life insurance premiums grew by 14 percent and non-life premiums by 16 percent.

Among private life insurers, health insurance premiums increased by 49 percent to Rs30.4 billion, and term life premiums rose by about 37 percent to more than Rs19.7 billion. In non-life, motor premiums grew by around 35 percent to more than Rs78.5 billion, and accident and health premiums increased by approximately 42 percent to more than Rs35.7 billion.

Premiums generated through digital distribution channels rose by 71 percent to around Rs6.8 billion. Takaful accounted for 16 percent of the life insurance market and 15 percent of the non-life market. The full report is available on SECP's website.
