Wasim Akram slams grand welcome for Razaullah after 3-0 defeat
The former fast bowler said Pakistan has accepted mediocrity after the young pacer was feted despite England whitewashing the Test series.
Former Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram has questioned the grand reception given to debutant pacer Razaullah after Pakistan returned from England, where the team lost the Test series 3-0. Minute Mirror reported that Akram said the celebrations were out of step with the result, while Wion quoted him as saying Pakistan has "accepted mediocrity."
Razaullah, a young fast bowler whose previous experience had come mainly in the Pakistan Super League, was brought into the side for the third and final Test after Pakistan made several changes following defeats at Headingley and Lord's. He made an immediate impact by claiming four wickets in his first Test appearance, according to Minute Mirror. The Daily Star highlighted "the beauty of Pakistan's raw talent" and said Razaullah provided "the missing intent" in the series, but the team could not avoid a whitewash.
Pakistan lost the first two Tests at Headingley and Lord's before making multiple changes for the final match. Razaullah's debut came in that game, and his four wickets made him one of the few bright spots in a difficult series, according to the reports. The whitewash meant England completed a clean sweep of the three-match contest.
Wion reported that Akram's remarks followed the circulation of footage showing Razaullah's reception after the squad landed in Pakistan. Minute Mirror described it as a grand welcome, with the young bowler feted by supporters and officials. Akram's criticism focused on the gap between the team's overall failure and the individual celebration. "We have accepted mediocrity," Wion quoted him as saying. The former captain's comments were widely shared, but the reports did not include a response from the Pakistan Cricket Board or from Razaullah himself.
The Pakistan Cricket Board has not announced the team's next international assignment, nor has it commented on Akram's remarks.
Cricinfo's feed also listed a separate headline, "Pakistan A v England Lions unofficial Test Match," but provided no match details. No player names or scores were provided. That fixture is part of the England Lions' development tour running alongside the senior series.
