Democrats take US Congress as Asian stocks swing on results
Tokyo's Nikkei fell sharply in volatile trading while US futures slipped before the vote and recovered afterwards, with bank strategists split on the outlook.

Democrats gained control of Congress in the US midterm elections, Nikkei Asia and the Financial Times reported, a result that drove volatile trading in Asia on Wednesday and left bank strategists divided over whether the slide in shares is ending.
Japan's Nikkei Stock Average fell sharply on Nov. 4, according to a photograph Nikkei Asia published of a Tokyo signboard. The outlet reported that Asian stocks ended mixed after a volatile session as investors tried to assess what a Democratic-controlled Congress would mean.
Reuters reported that US stock futures dipped as investors awaited the results. The Financial Times reported that stocks recovered as investors digested the Democrats' sweep. Neither account gave the size of the moves.
Morgan Stanley strategists said the US market correction is nearing its end, Reuters reported. A J.P. Morgan strategist said investors must get used to AI stock volatility, Morningstar reported. Morningstar's headline did not name the strategist.
The midterms decide control of the House of Representatives and the Senate, and with it the passage of tax, spending and regulatory bills that investors price into share values. Control of either chamber can stall or advance legislation affecting sectors from energy to technology.
How the reports differ
Reuters led on US futures slipping while investors waited for the results, and separately carried Morgan Stanley's view that the correction is close to over. The Financial Times led on a recovery once the Democrats' sweep was known, while Nikkei Asia stayed with Asia, describing a mixed close in volatile trade and publishing a photograph of a sharp fall in Tokyo's Nikkei average. Morningstar led with a J.P. Morgan strategist's warning that investors must get used to AI stock volatility. None of the outlets gave the size of the market moves or the final seat totals.
