Gilgit-Baltistan marked its Independence Day on Sunday with a ceremony at the Martyrs' Monument in Chinar Bagh, Gilgit, where the governor and the chief minister hoisted the national flag, according to a report by Such TV.
Governor Syed Mehdi Shah and Chief Minister Amjad Hussain raised the flag, laid a floral wreath at the Martyrs' and Heroes' Monument and offered Fateha, the channel reported. Its account names the site both as the Martyrs' Monument and as the Martyrs' and Heroes' Monument.
Addressing the ceremony, the governor said the day called for a renewed pledge of loyalty to the homeland and a commitment to play an active part in the region's development. He said freedom was a great blessing and that safeguarding it was the duty of everyone present, Such TV reported.
The report gave no figure for the number of people who attended and did not list any other programme for the day in Gilgit city or in the region's other districts. It described the day as being celebrated with traditional zeal, without setting out where else celebrations took place. No other official was named in the account of the ceremony.
Such TV's report was filed in the early hours of 1 November. Gilgit-Baltistan observes that date as the anniversary of the end of Dogra rule in 1947.
No separate statement from the Governor's Secretariat or from the Chief Minister's Office on the ceremony appeared alongside the report.
