At least six people were killed when a gunman opened fire in the historic centre of Kraków, Poland's second-largest city, on Saturday, according to Polish police.

The shooting struck the city's Main Square, The Rio Times reported, saying the gunman fired on crowds. Euronews reported that around a dozen people were wounded. CBC reported that 15 people were injured. The Rio Times put the number of wounded at more than a dozen. Winnipeg Sun reported six people killed but did not give a figure for the wounded.

Euronews published amateur video showing people fleeing as shots rang out, with cars passing through the area. In the footage, people run for cover while traffic continues along the street. Other video showed emergency services responding at the scene, with broken glass and overturned chairs nearby. A helicopter could be seen flying over the area. Hindustan Times also published video that it said captured the moment gunfire erupted in the square, leaving six dead.

The reports did not name the gunman, describe a possible motive or say whether anyone had been arrested. They did not say what kind of weapon was used.

Police accounts of the casualty toll differed. Euronews, citing police, said at least six people had been killed and around a dozen wounded. CBC's headline said the gunman killed six people and injured 15. The Rio Times, also citing police, said six were dead and more than a dozen wounded. Winnipeg Sun reported six killed in the historic centre.

Hindustan Times said its video showed the moment gunfire erupted in "Poland's Krakow square". The report gave the death toll as six.

The reports did not say how many people were in the square at the time.
