KP police seek Rs40 billion from centre for 12-district overhaul
IG Zulfiqar Hameed says the money would buy drones, anti-drone systems and armoured vehicles and finish Safe City work in all 12 districts within a year.

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police need between Rs30 billion and Rs40 billion to strengthen security and rebuild policing infrastructure in 12 districts, and the department has asked the federal government for the money, Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed has said.
Hameed said discussions with the federal government on the funding were under way. Minute Mirror reported the requirement as Rs30 billion to Rs40 billion, while ARY News reported the demand as Rs40 billion.
The provincial police chief said four areas had been picked for attention across the 12 districts. The force wants modern weapons, drones, anti-drone systems, bulletproof vehicles and armoured personnel carriers, along with other equipment, to improve what police units can do in the field.
Hameed put Safe City projects in all 12 districts among the priorities and said the work was moving quickly in Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu and Lakki Marwat, according to ARY News. The target is to complete Safe City installations in the districts within one year.
New police stations and police posts are being built in five northern districts of the province, he said.
The IG said the merged districts had previously gone without proper police infrastructure. Facilities would be established there and the existing policing system strengthened to improve law enforcement. Districts with weak infrastructure would be upgraded, the shortage of police personnel addressed, and officers given specialised training to handle security challenges.
On pay, Hameed said a summary proposing salary increases for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police had been prepared. The finance department will review the proposals and give its recommendations before the summary is sent to the governor for consideration.
The seven tribal districts that merged with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in 2018 have long been short of police stations, equipment and staff compared with the settled districts. Neither report named all 12 districts covered by the plan or set out a timetable for the federal funding decision.
