Murree's district administration has activated a winter tourism safety and disaster plan for the snowfall season, which officially runs from 15 December to 15 February, ProPakistani reported on Monday.

The plan, called Mission Safe Winter, was finalised with the National Disaster Management Authority and Rescue 1122 and was announced after the first snowfall in the Galiyat region.

Nineteen tourist facilitation centres have been set up in Murree, Galiyat and on the routes linking Rawalpindi with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Kashmir. The centres are meant to give visitors immediate help and guidance in an emergency, according to the report.

Roads and entry points will be watched round the clock through 181 Safe City cameras and thermal drones. A Pakistan Army contingent will stay deployed for continuous monitoring. The report did not give the number of troops involved or how long they will remain in the area.

The health department has been told to keep doctors and medicines available at hospitals for 24 hours. The Punjab Enforcement and Regulatory Authority will check hotels and petrol stations for overcharging and for violations of official rates, and uniform fare schedules and standard food prices are to be enforced.

More than 20 snow-clearing vehicles, cranes and loaders have been positioned at key locations to keep traffic moving during heavy snowfall. New Rescue 1122 stations have been made operational. An air ambulance strip along the Murree Expressway has been proposed to allow aerial assistance in serious emergencies; the report gave no timetable or cost for the proposal.

ProPakistani quoted the administration as saying the arrangements were meant to keep traffic flowing and prevent any untoward incident during the snowfall season.

The report did not say what the plan will cost, how many staff will run each facilitation centre, or how many personnel each department will contribute. The Express Tribune also reported the launch of the plan, without additional detail.
