Naqvi hints Imran Khan may be shifted to Islamabad Model Jail

The Express Tribune reports the interior minister's remark as a hint, with no date, order or direct quotation given for any transfer from Adiala.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has hinted that Imran Khan may be shifted from Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail to the newly built Model Jail in Islamabad, according to The Express Tribune.

The newspaper presented the remark as a hint rather than an announcement. In the headline and summary available, it did not say when any transfer would take place, whether a formal order has been issued, or what the minister's exact words were.

Imran Khan, the former prime minister and PTI founder, has been held at Adiala Jail. A move to the Islamabad facility would put him in a jail in the federal capital rather than in Punjab.

The Express Tribune was one of two independent outlets carrying the subject. Dunya News' Inside Story programme, in a segment featuring Samar Abbas, framed its discussion around two questions: whether Imran Khan had sent a message from jail, and whether PTI is preparing a new plan. The published summary of the segment did not say what the message was reported to contain, who was said to have carried it, or what the new plan consists of, and the programme's contents could not be independently verified.

Neither report carried a response from PTI, from Imran Khan's legal team, or from the jail authorities.

Neither said whether the Islamabad Model Jail is ready to receive prisoners, how many inmates it can hold, or whether any paperwork for a transfer has been filed. The Express Tribune's account, available only in headline and summary form, also did not indicate whether the hint referred to a transfer in the coming days or to a longer-term arrangement.

The interior ministry has not issued a statement on the matter that this newspaper has seen.

Transfers of high-profile prisoners in Pakistan are decided by the interior ministry and the jail administration concerned, and are usually notified in writing before they take place. No such notification has been reported in this case.

Imran Khan has been in custody since August 2023, when he was arrested in the Toshakhana case at his Zaman Park residence in Lahore. He has since been convicted and sentenced in several cases, and has challenged those convictions in appeal.
