The Peshawar High Court has granted bail to 150 workers of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf who were being held under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order, The News International reported.

The report did not name the bench that passed the order, the date it was announced, or the districts where the 150 were detained. It gave no names of detainees and said nothing about how long they had been in custody.

Section 3 of the MPO allows a provincial government or a district magistrate to order a person held without trial on grounds of public order. A detainee can challenge the order before a high court through a bail petition instead of waiting for a trial, and that is the route the 150 cases took to Peshawar.

The report carried no statement from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa home department, the office of the provincial advocate general or the PTI's provincial chapter on whether the government will challenge the order, or on whether the detainees have been released.

Bail in MPO cases is decided on the record the detention authority places before the court. A high court order granting bail does not by itself bar the government from issuing a fresh detention order.

The PTI is the party of former prime minister Imran Khan. Peshawar is the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the seat of the province's high court, which hears detention and bail petitions from across the province.

Bail orders of this kind normally require each detainee to furnish surety, at an amount fixed in the order itself.

The number of detainees covered by the order and the terms set for their release could not be independently confirmed.
