Eleven people were killed and 33 injured when a passenger bus and a truck collided on Depalpur Road near Pakpattan on Thursday, according to the district administration and Rescue 1122.

The bus was on its way from Multan to Kasur when it met a truck coming from the opposite direction, Dawn reported, citing a district administration press release. Rescue 1122 said the impact left several passengers trapped inside the wreckage.

Rescue teams reached the site after reports of the crash and worked for about three hours, using cranes and heavy machinery to clear the wreckage and pull out those trapped, Minute Mirror reported.

Eight injured passengers were given initial medical treatment at the scene and 25 others were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital in Pakpattan, the outlet reported.

Deputy Commissioner Asif Raza declared an emergency at DHQ Hospital because of the number of casualties and directed that additional doctors and medical staff be arranged. He and District Police Officer Javed Iqbal Chadhar went to the accident site to supervise the rescue operation and later visited the hospital to check on the injured and review the medical arrangements. The deputy commissioner expressed sorrow over the deaths and offered condolences to the families of those killed.

President Asif Ali Zardari expressed grief over the deaths and prayed for the recovery of the injured, Minute Mirror reported. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz condoled with the bereaved families, directed authorities to ensure the best possible medical care for the injured and sought a report on the accident. National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq also expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and prayed for the early recovery of the injured.

Neither report stated what caused the collision.

How the reports differ

Both outlets put the toll at 11 killed and 33 injured, but they led from different sources: Dawn credited a district administration press release, while Minute Mirror cited Rescue 1122. Minute Mirror alone reported that eight injured passengers were treated at the scene and 25 taken to DHQ Hospital, that the rescue lasted about three hours with cranes, that the deputy commissioner declared an emergency at the hospital, and it carried the condolence statements of President Asif Ali Zardari, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq. Dawn described the other vehicle as a trailer in its opening line and as a truck afterwards, while Minute Mirror called it a truck throughout.
