The government intends to abolish the super tax completely, the chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue said, adding that the rate has already been cut by two percentage points and that work on phasing the levy out has begun.

Rashid Mahmood Langrial said this while addressing a meeting during a visit to the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry in Karachi, The Express Tribune reported. The report did not say when the super tax would end, or what would replace the revenue it brings in. The levy is charged on high earners on top of ordinary income and corporate tax.

Langrial announced that an office would be established at KATI to address tax-related problems faced by industrialists in the Korangi Industrial Area, the area the association represents.

He said the FBR would consult stakeholders to remove shortcomings in the import of raw materials. The scope of the FBR help desk would also be expanded from Karachi to Sukkur.

On the leather industry, he said meetings would be held to resolve the border trade problems it faces.

He said the FBR would work with the pharmaceutical industry to implement a model similar to that of the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan so that the track and trace system can be made operational.

Langrial said the FBR's objective was to improve the tax system and to facilitate the business community.

He urged industrialists and traders to cooperate with the FBR in identifying and eliminating the elements involved in tax evasion, so that the tax system could be made more transparent and effective.
