The Sindh government has decided to reopen the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) U-turn on University Road in Karachi, saying the move will ease traffic for motorists and commuters affected by construction work. The decision was taken at a meeting of the provincial Transport and Mass Transit Department chaired by Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, Minute Mirror reported.

The same meeting reviewed arrangements for operating the double-decker and electric buses that have recently arrived in Karachi. Officials briefed the meeting on plans to put the new buses on suitable routes across the city.

Memon directed the department to finalise those routes. He said he expected another batch of double-decker and electric buses to reach Karachi later this month.

He asked officials to plan the new service in full, covering operations and service management, and to send the buses to the areas of Karachi where public transport is needed most.

On the U-turn, Memon said reopening it would give citizens extra travel convenience and help ease the difficulty they face in commuting. Motorists and commuters have been facing delays because of the ongoing construction work on University Road.

The meeting also reviewed progress on the Red Line BRT project. Memon called for extraordinary measures to complete the project on time and directed officials to speed up construction on the second section of the Taj Haider Bridge.

He instructed the officials concerned to monitor construction activity daily and keep the work on the project schedule.

The Red Line is one of several BRT corridors the provincial government is building in Karachi, and the bus fleet expansion has run alongside that construction. The Sindh government has not given a date for when the U-turn will reopen.

The meeting was attended by the transport secretary, the chief executive of TransKarachi, the project director of the Yellow Line and other relevant officials.

The Associated Press of Pakistan's item was a single photograph of a roadside teddy bear vendor on University Road and carried none of the transport decisions. Minute Mirror alone reported the transport department meeting, the U-turn decision and the plans for the double-decker and electric buses.
