Marvell to buy Lumentum for $115bn in AI data-centre bet

Reuters gave the figure without terms or a closing date, as an LG CNS facility opened in Jakarta and Bank of America warned on the AI boom.

Marvell has agreed to buy Lumentum for $115 billion, Reuters reported, describing the transaction as a bet on AI data centres.

The report gave no other terms. It did not say whether Marvell would pay in cash, shares or a mix, when the deal is expected to close, or how either company's board approved it. No statement from either company was carried.

At $115 billion the transaction would rank among the largest corporate acquisitions announced this year.

In Jakarta, LG CNS, the information technology affiliate of South Korea's LG group, has completed construction of an AI data centre, Yonhap reported from Seoul. Yonhap's dispatch gave no capacity or cost for the facility.

Bank of America warned that the AI boom is "a major risk to the global economy", Fortune reported, in a piece published the day before a US midterm vote that Fortune said was framed around a backlash against data centres.

The Hindustan Times published an article asking whether orbital data centres could ruin the night sky, a question about what happens when AI computing moves off the ground.

Reuters' report did not say what Lumentum makes, how many staff the combined company would have, or whether regulators in any country would have to approve the purchase.

How the reports differ

Reuters alone carried the $115 billion figure and built its report around the Marvell-Lumentum deal. Yonhap led instead on LG CNS completing an AI data centre in Jakarta and identified the company as LG's information technology affiliate, with no mention of the Marvell deal in its headline. Fortune put Bank of America's warning first and tied it to a midterm vote it says was fought over data-centre backlash. The Hindustan Times carried no deal or construction news at all, asking instead whether orbital data centres could ruin the night sky.
