Three children were killed when a gas cylinder exploded on Pajaggi Road in Peshawar on Thursday, according to Lady Reading Hospital, where the injured were taken.

Hospital spokesperson Muhammad Asim said five people hurt in the blast were brought to LRH. Three of them, all children, died of their injuries. A woman and a child were still under treatment at the hospital, he said.

The reports did not say what set off the cylinder, where it was when it exploded, or how old the children were. None of the outlets carried a police statement on the blast. The condition of the woman and the child still in hospital was not described.

Lady Reading Hospital is the main government referral hospital in Peshawar.

Cylinder explosions have caused heavy casualties in Pakistani towns and cities this year. The Express Tribune reported that on 16 July at least 10 people suffered severe burns when a gas cylinder exploded at a sweets and fast food shop near Chungi No 5 in Burewala. Rescue 1122 teams gave first aid and shifted the injured to the Burewala tehsil headquarters hospital, and the blast shattered the glass windows of shops nearby.

On 19 February, at least 16 people were killed and 13 injured when a gas cylinder explosion caused the roof of a residential building to collapse in Gul Rana Colony in Karachi's Soldier Bazaar, according to a Rescue 1122 Sindh spokesperson. Eyewitnesses told the Express Tribune the blast shook nearby buildings.

That outlet also pointed readers to its report of 25 people killed and more than 240 injured in LPG cylinder blasts across Punjab.

How the reports differ

Express Tribune and Dunya News both reported that the three dead were children, while Aaj News's headline described the toll as three injured people who passed away after the blast. Express Tribune alone named Lady Reading Hospital and its spokesperson, Muhammad Asim, and reported that five injured were brought there. Daily Excelsior's headline placed the blast in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa without naming Peshawar, the city the other three reports gave.
