Police in Bajaur district have arrested a seminary teacher accused of beating a 12-year-old student to death inside his madressah, officials said on Tuesday.

The boy died after the teacher beat him inside the seminary in the Qazafi Bandagi area of Utmankhel tehsil, Dawn reported. The teacher fled after the beating.

A team from Utmankhel police station, led by District Police Officer Khan Zeb, arrested the suspect in a raid carried out once the incident came to light.

Zahid Nawaz, the Regional Police Officer for Malakand Division, took notice of the child's death and ordered the arrest, according to Dawn. Bajaur is one of the districts of Malakand Division.

Dawn's report did not name the boy or the teacher, gave no date for the beating, said nothing about the injuries that killed the child, and carried no details of any case registered.

The Express Tribune also reported the arrest, under the headline "Cleric arrested after Bajaur madrassa child death", describing the suspect as a cleric. Its published summary repeated the headline, with no further detail on the child's age, the raid or the police officers named by Dawn.

Neither report said whether the teacher had been produced before a court, whether he has a lawyer, or whether a case had been registered against the madressah's administration.

How the reports differ

Dawn named the officers handling the case, identifying Zahid Nawaz as Regional Police Officer for Malakand Division and Khan Zeb as the district police officer who led the Utmankhel raid, and gave the child's age as 12. The Express Tribune headlined the arrest of a "cleric" and its published summary repeated that headline with no names, no age and no account of the raid.
