Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi said on Sunday that the federal government is failing to give the province the support it deserves, and that the neglect should be brought to an end without further delay.

He was addressing the annual conference of the Pakistan Association of Urological Surgeons in Peshawar, Dawn reported. The governor said practical steps were required to improve the province's health sector on the pattern of Punjab and Sindh.

Medical conferences, he said, give doctors a platform to promote knowledge and research, exchange clinical experience and raise awareness of modern treatment.

The News International also carried the address, under the headline "Governor seeks more support from Centre to KP", and led on the same demand for greater federal backing for the province.

Both reports drew on the governor's speech at the urologists' annual meeting. Dawn quoted him saying that ignoring Khyber Pakhtunkhwa must stop, and that the province's health services needed to be brought up to the level of the two larger provinces through concrete measures rather than statements.

Kundi holds the governor's office in Peshawar, the provincial capital where the conference was held.

Neither report carried a response from the federal government to the governor's remarks, and neither gave figures for federal health transfers to the province or for the province's health budget.

The Pakistan Association of Urological Surgeons holds the conference annually, and Dawn reported that the governor described such gatherings as an important forum for the exchange of experience among specialists and for awareness about newer forms of treatment.

Dawn's account of the speech focused on the governor's criticism of the Centre's treatment of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and on his call for the province's health sector to be developed along the lines of Punjab and Sindh.
