President Donald Trump made his closing pitch to Republican voters at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington on Monday, the day before US midterm elections that will decide control of both chambers of Congress.

Trump described the vote as "the most important midterm I believe in our lifetime" and urged Republicans to unite, CNA reported.

A White House official told the AFP news agency that the speech would highlight "this administration's achievements to make the country safer and wealthier", according to Dawn.

Dawn reported that polls show Democrats poised to seize the House of Representatives and within reach of the Senate in Tuesday's vote, a shift it said would impose tight political constraints on the president. No polling figures were given in the reports available.

The choice of venue drew as much comment as the speech. The Associated Press described the Reflecting Pool as problem-plagued, and thecanadianpressnews.ca referred to a revamp plagued by problems. Dawn said the botched repairs at the landmark had come to symbolise what it called a chaotic presidency, and described Trump, who is 80, as rallying Republicans against a predicted tide of Democratic victories.

CNA, in a photo caption accompanying its report, said the pool had reopened after months of repairs on Monday. Central Oregon Daily reported simply that the president delivered remarks at the Reflecting Pool.

The Associated Press billed the event in its headline as Trump "giving" his closing midterm pitch, while CNA, Dawn and Central Oregon Daily reported it as delivered or scheduled for Monday.

Control of the House and Senate is at stake in Tuesday's elections. The reports gave no figures for turnout or crowd size at the Washington event, and no text of the full speech beyond the extracts quoted by CNA and Dawn.

How the reports differ

Dawn led with the electoral map, reporting that polls show Democrats poised to take the House and within reach of the Senate, and it carried a line from a White House official, sourced to AFP, promising a speech on the administration's achievements. CNA led instead with Trump's own words, quoting him calling this "the most important midterm I believe in our lifetime" and urging Republicans to unite. The Associated Press and thecanadianpressnews.ca put the state of the Reflecting Pool at the top of their framing, with the Canadian outlet calling the renovation plagued by problems, while Dawn went further and said the botched repairs had come to symbolise a chaotic presidency. Central Oregon Daily reported only that the president delivered remarks there.
