The Election Commission of Pakistan has issued a show-cause notice to MQM-Pakistan for not holding its intra-party elections, and given the party 14 days to explain the delay.

UrduPoint reported the notice on Tuesday. It said the commission acted after an extended deadline that ran to October passed without the internal polls being held.

The report did not give the date the notice was issued or served on the party, the date the original deadline fell due, or the length of the extension the commission had granted.

A show-cause notice calls on the recipient to state in writing why the commission should not act against it. UrduPoint did not say what step the commission has threatened, whether it has set out a penalty, or whether MQM-Pakistan has asked for more time. No public statement from the party had appeared when the report was filed.

Registered political parties are required to hold elections for their office-bearers on a set schedule and to submit the record to the commission. Notices follow when a party lets a deadline pass without holding the polls, or without informing the commission of the outcome. The commission has used the same procedure against other parties over internal elections in recent years.

The commission can close the matter if it accepts the party's reply, or proceed with further action. UrduPoint's report set out no timetable for a decision.

MQM-Pakistan's organisation is based in Karachi and Hyderabad, from where its members have been elected to the National Assembly and the Sindh Assembly.

How the reports differ

UrduPoint carried the development in two reports: the first said only that the commission had issued a show-cause notice, while the second added that it concerned intra-party elections, that an extended deadline running to October had passed and that the party has 14 days to answer. Express News did not report the commission's notice; its MQM-Pakistan story concerned a letter from Sindh Assembly member Mahesh Kumar Hasija to Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah seeking a public holiday on 10 November for Diwali and the postponement of examinations scheduled from 8 to 10 November.
