Construction of the Margalla Avenue extension from the N-5 to the M-1 and the Sangjani interchange has reached 35 per cent completion, with work running around the clock, the Capital Development Authority said on Sunday.

CDA Chairman and Islamabad Chief Commissioner Sohail Ashraf visited the project and reviewed construction progress, the Associated Press of Pakistan reported. He directed the departments concerned to remove the bottlenecks holding up work so that the project is completed on schedule.

The scheme covers the extension of Margalla Avenue from the N-5 to the M-1 and a new interchange at Sangjani, on the route between the capital and the motorway network.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi put the finish line sooner. After a late-night inspection of the project near Sangjani on Thursday, he said it would be completed within the next few weeks, ahead of its official April deadline, according to TechJuice.

Naqvi said the new interchange would improve traffic flow and give easier access to commuters travelling from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to Islamabad and to passengers heading for Islamabad International Airport. The CDA chairman, the Islamabad inspector general of police and senior technical officials accompanied him on the visit, TechJuice reported.

Work at the site covers the proposed interchange bridge, including piling, foundation excavation and retaining and abutment walls. Teams are also carrying out earthwork, preparing the road sub-base, relocating utility lines and clearing construction sites affected by land-related and technical issues, according to TechJuice.

The project aims to improve connectivity between Islamabad and the motorway network and to make travel easier for commuters, the outlet reported.

The News reported that the Margalla Avenue-Motorway link would be complete in weeks. ProPakistani and Bloom Pakistan said the extension was expected to be finished within weeks, ahead of the April deadline. None of the three reports gave a completion figure.

How the reports differ

APP led with the CDA's own account, giving the 35 per cent completion figure and reporting a site visit by CDA Chairman and Islamabad Chief Commissioner Sohail Ashraf, who ordered bottlenecks removed. TechJuice alone attributed the 'within weeks' timeline to Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, after a late-night inspection near Sangjani on Thursday, and alone listed the works under way, including piling, retaining and abutment walls and utility relocation. The News, ProPakistani and Bloom Pakistan reported only that the link would be finished in weeks, ahead of the April deadline, and carried no completion percentage.
