Pakistan opens Kartarpur Corridor for Guru Nanak's 557th birth anniversary
Pakistan's government announced the opening on 17 September 2026; India has blocked pilgrim traffic through the corridor since May 2025, citing the Pahalgam incident.

Pakistan has opened the Kartarpur Corridor for the 557th birth anniversary of Baba Guru Nanak, and the government says arrangements are complete for Sikh pilgrims to perform their religious rites, Express News reported.
The government announced on 17 September 2026 that the corridor would be opened for the anniversary, Express News reported, describing the decision as one taken in the spirit of religious goodwill. Pilgrim traffic through the corridor has been suspended from the Indian side since May 2025, when New Delhi closed the route and cited the Pahalgam incident as its reason.
Sikh organisations have demanded continuously that the corridor be reopened so that pilgrims can reach Kartarpur and perform their rituals at the holy sites there, the outlet reported.
On 27 October 2026 the Punjab Assembly in India passed a resolution in favour of reopening the corridor, according to Express News.
Indian Sikh pilgrims who spoke to Express News welcomed Pakistan's decision. They said Pakistan had shown religious tolerance and peaceful intent by opening the corridor, in contrast with India's behaviour, according to the report.
The pilgrims said the affection, sincerity and friendly manner of the Pakistani government and the people was the best illustration of harmony between faiths, the outlet reported.
The corridor is the passage Indian Sikhs use to reach the Kartarpur shrine. Its suspension from May 2025 left pilgrims without that route, and the community had asked repeatedly for it to be restored so that visits to the holy sites and the rituals performed there could resume.
Express News reported that the government had completed all arrangements for the rituals marking the anniversary.
UrduPoint also carried the opening, describing it in its headline as a demonstration of religious tolerance and peace set against India's behaviour.
How the reports differ
UrduPoint led its headline on the contrast with India, presenting the opening as a display of religious tolerance and peacefulness "unlike India's behaviour"; its full report could not be retrieved. Express News led on the opening itself and was the only one of the two whose details could be read: Pakistan's announcement on 17 September 2026, the Indian suspension in place since May 2025 over the Pahalgam incident, and the 27 October 2026 resolution in the Indian Punjab Assembly. Express News also carried the pilgrims' comments praising the Pakistani government and people.
