Security forces foiled an infiltration attempt along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in the Shalozan sector of Kurram district on 5 November, after what security sources described as unprovoked firing by the Afghan Taliban.

The Associated Press of Pakistan reported that the infiltrators belonged to Fitna al-Khwarij, the term Pakistani security officials use for the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan. The Express Tribune, citing state media, named the group as the TTP and said the army had foiled the attempt.

According to APP, the Afghan Taliban "resorted to unprovoked firing" as the attempt was under way. Pakistani troops responded "swiftly and in a befitting manner" and employed heavy weapons to target their positions, the agency quoted security sources as saying. It called the response "timely and effective".

APP said the response foiled the infiltration. None of the reports carried a casualty figure for either side, the number of fighters involved, or the exact time of the exchange. No statement from the military's media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations, appeared in them, and no outlet quoted an Afghan Taliban official. The APP report named no officer or unit, attributing the account to security sources alone.

Aaj English, 24NewsHD and UrduPoint reported the same sequence, attributing it to security sources rather than to a named official. UrduPoint led its report on the Afghan Taliban opening fire. The Express Tribune attributed its account to state media.

APP's headline placed the incident in "Kurram Sector", while its text and the other reports located it in the Shalozan sector of Kurram. Shalozan lies on the Kurram side of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. APP filed its report from Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The reports said the Pakistani response targeted the positions from which the firing came and that the infiltration bid was stopped. They did not say whether the firing hit any military post or civilian property in the area.

How the reports differ

The Express Tribune named the group as the TTP and sourced its account to state media, while APP used the state's term Fitna al-Khwarij and cited security sources only. UrduPoint led its report on the Afghan Taliban opening fire, while APP and the Express Tribune led on the infiltration attempt being foiled. APP's headline put the incident in "Kurram Sector", though its own text and the other outlets placed it in the Shalozan sector of Kurram.
