Police in Skardu have arrested the main suspect in the killing of a married couple and their two young children, and say the man is the woman's paternal uncle, ARY News reported.

The suspect, identified as Rajab, and a second man described as his accomplice were arrested, according to the report. Police said those involved in the killings had gone into hiding in Kurram district and that operations were under way to trace the rest.

Muhammad Aslam, his wife Hania Aslam, their four-year-old son Mehdi and two-year-old daughter Zahra were found dead inside their house in Madina Colony, Skardu. Police said the four were killed with sharp-edged weapons after the attackers entered the home.

Investigators have found evidence suggesting five people took part in the killings, police said.

A case was registered on the complaint of Khadim Hussain, a brother of the dead man. ARY News reported that the FIR named the woman's father, her brothers and her maternal uncle, while the report of the arrests identified the main suspect as her paternal uncle.

The complainant said Aslam had received serious threats over his marriage. Aslam belonged to Skardu and his wife was originally from Parachinar; the couple married about six years ago in Karachi and later moved to Skardu.

DIG Gilgit-Baltistan Asif Mehmood said every aspect of the incident was being investigated, including a possible link to the couple's love marriage. He said all available resources would be used to arrest those responsible and to secure justice for the family.

The killings brought residents of Skardu out in protest. Demonstrators demanded the arrest of those responsible and justice for the four members of the family.
