Maliha Ali beats Russian champion at IMMAF world championships
The 24-year-old from Hunza took a split decision over Veronika Drozdova, 19, a two-time European champion, in the 65.8kg featherweight bout in Tbilisi, Georgia.

Maliha Ali, a 24-year-old fighter from Hunza in Gilgit-Baltistan, beat Russia's Veronika Drozdova by split decision in their featherweight (65.8kg) bout at the IMMAF World Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia, Dawn reported.
Drozdova, 19, is a two-time European champion. Dawn reported the bout was fought on Tuesday at the world championships of amateur mixed martial arts, which is the amateur world title event for the sport.
Russia arrived in Georgia with more than 60 athletes, government backing and one of the best-funded programmes in the sport, according to Dawn, which set the result against that background.
Maliha came into the tournament after a silver medal at the IMMAF World Cup in Angola. She is also a wushu champion and a national kickboxing gold medallist, Dawn reported.
Pakistan entered seven fighters in the championships, Pakistan Today reported, leading its coverage on the size of the contingent rather than the result against Drozdova.
The win was carried across Pakistani outlets with different descriptions of the beaten fighter. 24NewsHD called Drozdova a "Russian MMA superstar" and described the result as sensational. Samaa headlined her as a Russian champion. The Nation and Dawn both identified her as a two-time European champion.
A split decision is one in which the judges are not unanimous. Dawn's report did not give the scorecards.
Hunza is a district in Gilgit-Baltistan.
Reports did not say how Pakistan's other six fighters fared in Tbilisi, or who Maliha fights next in the featherweight competition.
How the reports differ
Dawn led on the scale of the Russian programme, noting that Russia brought more than 60 athletes and government backing, and set out Maliha's wushu and kickboxing record. Pakistan Today led on Pakistan's seven-fighter contingent rather than the result itself. The Nation and Samaa headlined Drozdova as a two-time European champion, while 24NewsHD called her a "Russian MMA superstar" and the win sensational. No outlet published a scorecard or reported how Pakistan's other six fighters fared.
