Heavy snowfall hit Kaghan Valley on Monday, sharply lowering temperatures and closing the Mansehra-Naran-Jalkhad (MNJ) Road to traffic between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan.

A police official told reporters that traffic between the two regions was temporarily suspended because of slippery conditions on the road, Dawn reported. He said the road had since been cleared for vehicles up to Naran, the commercial hub of the valley.

Tourists were barred from travelling beyond Naran towards Babusar Top until the weather improved, the official said.

Snow began falling early in the morning at Babusar Top, Saiful Muluk Lake, Battakundi, Basal, Lolosar Lake and Naran, according to the report.

Babusar Top is the pass that connects Kaghan Valley in Mansehra district to Chilas in Gilgit-Baltistan. The MNJ Road runs from Mansehra through the valley to the pass and carries tourists, goods and local traffic over it, offering a second route between the two regions besides the Karakoram Highway.

The pass is generally shut to vehicles by snow in the winter months, and the first heavy fall of the season closes the through route until it reopens.

Dawn's report did not say whether any vehicles or travellers were stranded on the road between Naran and the pass, and gave no forecast for further snow in the coming days.

Naran, where the road has been cleared, holds most of the valley's hotels, shops and transport stands, and it is from there that vehicles climb towards the pass.
